Fishpond Narrow Gauge Railway

The Great Fishponds of Hortobágy represent one of the greatest fishpond systems of Central Europe, which in addition to functioning as fishponds is the habitat a diverse and rich biology. The 2000-hectare central lake unit has been protected area since the foundation of the Hortobágy National Park. The birds nesting here and the migrating birds stopping here are especially valuable. During the past 35 years close to 300 bird species were observed at the lakes, and as a result of this the fishpond system became one of the most renowned bird habitats of Central Europe.

The renewed narrow gauge railway now capable of transporting people as well offers a unique opportunity for tourists to reach even the most remote sections of the fishpond system in a comfortable way in order to admire the unique landscape and the rich avifauna of the inner lakes.

The water system of the close to one hundred year old fishpond system, its lakes and its industrial history monuments offer a unique view. This is the only narrow gauge railway in Hungary that runs in a fishpond environment.

Location: It is located 7-8 km from the Hortobágy village. It may be approached by leaving Main Road 33 at its km 67 exit and following the direction of the Hortobágy-Halastó (Great Fishponds of Hortobágy).
